What it is

UV coating is a liquid finish spread onto the printed sheet and cured almost immediately with ultraviolet light. Film lamination bonds a separate plastic film over the sheet with adhesive, pressure, and often heat. Both come in gloss and matte looks, but only lamination adds a continuous film layer.

Choose UV coating for a hard, glossy surface with little added bulk, especially on covers and promotional print. Choose film lamination when handling, moisture, abrasion, or a tactile finish such as soft-touch matters more. Spot UV is the selective version used to make only chosen areas shine.

Gotcha: neither finish is automatically fold-safe or pen-friendly. A UV coat can crack across a heavy fold, while laminate can lift at an edge or separate along a bad crease. Score before folding, keep the finish compatible with any later foil or glue operation, and approve a finished sample rather than judging an uncoated press proof.
