What it is
Foil stamping presses a heated metal die against a roll of thin pigmented or metallic film, transferring it onto the paper wherever the die touches. No ink is involved, which is why it looks like actual metal: printed gold ink is a dull mustard, foil is a mirror.
Foils come in gold, silver, copper, holographic, matte pigment, and clear registered varieties. Combine the die with pressure and you get foil deboss, where the shine sits in a pressed-in well. Reach for it on invitations, book covers, wine labels, and packaging, and expect a one-time die charge per design plus a per-pass cost for every extra foil color.
Gotchas: foil is on or off, so gradients, photos, and screened tints are impossible. Supply vector art at 100% K on its own layer. Hairlines under about 0.5pt and small serif type either break up or fill in as the hot foil spreads, and very large solid areas tend to show pinholes and speckle, so most designers break big shapes up rather than fight them.
