What it is
Color calibration moves a display, printer, or press toward a known target. Profiling then measures how that calibrated device actually behaves and records the result in an ICC profile. Together they let color-managed software translate color predictably between devices.
Calibrate before soft-proofing, retouching, or approving color on screen. A hardware colorimeter such as the Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro, successor to the X-Rite i1Display, measures white point, brightness, and tone response more reliably than eyeballing test images.
Gotcha: calibration is not permanent. Displays drift, room light changes judgment, and an overly bright screen makes a normal print look dark by comparison. The monitor profile belongs to the operating system as the display description; never assign it to the image document.

Target D65 white, gamma 2.2, and 120 cd/m2, disable automatic brightness and color-temperature features, save the measured ICC profile as the operating system's active display profile, and run the software's validation pass. Report average and maximum CIEDE2000 delta E and the achieved white point and luminance.
