What it is

Macro photography records very small subjects at high magnification. True macro commonly means a 1:1 reproduction ratio, where a 10mm object projects 10mm across the sensor, though the word is also used loosely for extreme close-ups. Nikon has always branded its own macro lenses Micro-Nikkor, which is why the two words get tangled. It turns watch machining, fabric weave, food texture, and insect anatomy into the whole landscape.

Reach for it when material and finish are the product story: jewelry, cosmetics, electronics, print, ingredients, or texture libraries. A dedicated macro lens focuses close while staying sharp and gives working distance for lights. Diffused light is especially useful because tiny scratches and specular highlights become enormous at this scale.

Gotcha: depth of field becomes razor thin as magnification rises, even at small apertures. Stopping down too far adds diffraction, and a millimeter of camera movement can lose focus. Use a tripod, manual focus, and focus stacking when the whole product detail needs to read sharp.
