What it is

Dynamic range is the span between the darkest usable shadow and the brightest unclipped highlight a camera can record in one exposure. It is measured in stops. A wider range can hold texture in a dark jacket and cloud detail around the sun at the same time; a narrower one forces one end toward black or white. Ansel Adams and Fred Archer's Zone System was the film-era method for the same problem, mapping scene brightness onto printable tones.

Reach for more dynamic range in backlit portraits, interiors with bright windows, midday landscapes, and reflective product shots. Capture RAW, protect important highlights, and shape the tones later. If the scene still exceeds what one frame can hold, bracket exposures for HDR or change the light with fill, flags, or diffusion.

Gotcha: dynamic range is capture latitude, not a command to make every tone equally bright. Deep shadows lifted from a RAW file can reveal noise, while a truly clipped highlight has no texture to recover. A flat-looking edit may contain plenty of range, and a contrasty one may be a deliberate use of it.
