Deciding what a set of images should say and look like before the camera comes out. The taste and the rules, not the shutter button.

What it is
Art direction is every decision about what an image means and how it looks, made before the shutter matters. Casting, wardrobe, props, location, palette, the quality and direction of light, camera height, how much empty space is left for a headline. The photographer owns exposure and craft; art direction owns what is in front of the lens and why. On a two-person team it is just you, in a document.
Reach for it before you book anything, and again before you type a prompt into an image model, because a model is a very fast photographer with no taste. The usual artifacts are a mood board (the look), a shot list (the inventory), and a one-page brief that says what the images should make someone feel and what they must never look like.
The gotcha: adjectives are not direction. 'Modern, clean, premium' describes nothing and every shoot briefed that way comes back wrong. Convert adjectives into rules a stranger could follow: 50mm at eye level, one window as the only light source, nobody smiling at camera, top third of every frame kept empty for type. If a rule cannot be checked on the back of a camera, it is not a rule yet.

Write a one-page art direction brief for [brand] product photography. Include: a one-sentence statement of what the images should make someone feel; casting and wardrobe rules; location or set; palette with 5 hex values; light rules (source size, direction, hardness, practical or studio); lens and camera height; composition rules including how much negative space to leave and where; grade reference (contrast, skin warmth, shadow tint); and a short 'never' list of things that would make the image wrong. Phrase every rule as something checkable on set, not as an adjective.
