What it is

The anamorphic look comes from lenses that squeeze a wider scene onto the film or sensor, then expand it for viewing. That optical squeeze can produce tall oval bokeh, horizontal flare streaks, edge distortion, and a very wide frame. Classic Panavision C Series lenses are a familiar cinema reference for this character.

Reach for it when the frame needs lateral scale and imperfect cinematic optics: landscapes, night streets, ensemble blocking, and science fiction. Give point lights room in the background and keep faces away from heavily distorted edges.

Gotcha: a wide crop alone is not anamorphic. Letterbox bars change the shape of the frame but do not create oval defocus or optical streaks. Stack every artifact at maximum strength and the image becomes a lens demo, so choose one or two cues to lead.
