Private label is a product made by a manufacturer for one retailer or brand to sell under its own name. The seller owns the customer-facing brand and controls the assortment; the factory may supply the formula, production, packaging, or all three. Costco's Kirkland Signature is a familiar private-label umbrella across many product categories.
Reach for it when you want more control over positioning, packaging, price, and margin than reselling someone else's brand gives you, without building a factory. Specifications can range from a lightly adapted stock product to a formula or design made only for you.
Gotcha: your name on the package makes quality and compliance your problem in the customer's eyes. Lock the specification, approved sample, testing, labeling, defect tolerance, and change-control process into the supplier agreement. Otherwise a quiet material substitution can change the product while the listing and reviews still describe the old one.
