What it is

An automated sequence that emails or texts shoppers who added items and then left, with a link that restores their cart. It only fires when you have an identity, which means the address has to be captured before payment: the email field on checkout step one, a newsletter popup, or a logged-in session. No identity, no recovery, which is why so much traffic is unreachable no matter what the tool promises.

Two different events get lumped together. Abandoned cart means items added, checkout never started. Abandoned checkout means they entered the flow and stalled at shipping or payment, and it converts far better because the intent was higher and the reason is usually fixable (surprise shipping cost, no wallet option). Typical cadence is three messages: about an hour, then a day, then three days.

Gotcha: leading with a discount teaches your regulars to abandon on purpose, and they will. Send the first message with no incentive and let it just remove friction. Second gotcha: the reported 'recovered revenue' is inflated, because plenty of those shoppers were coming back anyway. Hold out a control group of 10% who get nothing and compare, or you are paying to take credit for sales you already had.

Ask AI for it

Build abandoned cart recovery for my store. Capture the shopper's email as soon as it is entered at checkout, and mark a cart abandoned when it has items, a known email, no completed order, and no activity for 60 minutes. Send a three-message sequence at 1 hour, 24 hours, and 72 hours, cancelling the rest the moment an order completes. Each message shows the actual line items with images and a one-click 'return to your cart' link carrying a token that rehydrates the exact cart. Message one carries no discount, message two answers objections (shipping cost, returns policy, stock), and only message three may include a time-limited code. Respect marketing consent, cap it at one sequence per shopper per 30 days, and log a control group that receives nothing so recovery can be measured against a baseline.
