Solarization partially reverses an image's tones, so part of the range behaves like a negative while the rest stays positive. In a digital version, values on one side of a chosen threshold are inverted, often creating sharp contour lines and strange color shifts.
Reach for it when a portrait, poster, or music visual needs a surreal darkroom look without becoming a complete photographic negative. The related Sabattier effect was made by exposing film or paper to light during development.
Gotcha: one hard threshold can break faces into harsh bands and make noise painfully obvious. Place the threshold around meaningful tonal detail, soften the transition slightly if needed, and check each color channel rather than trusting the composite preview.
