What it is
Soft focus diffuses fine detail and spreads highlights into a gentle glow while broad shapes remain recognizable. It can come from an optical diffusion filter, or digitally from a blurred duplicate mixed back over the sharp original.
Portraits, romantic scenes, dream sequences, and period looks benefit when clinical sharpness feels wrong. Unlike missed focus, soft focus keeps a sharp image underneath, so eyes and silhouettes can still hold.
Gotcha: too much blur and screen blending turns blacks gray, blooms every bright patch, and makes skin look waxy. Use a small blur radius, blend lightly, and mask extra sharpness back into eyes, hairlines, text, and other details that must carry the frame.
