What it is

An anaglyph combines two slightly different views of a scene into separate color channels, most often red for one eye and cyan for the other. Matching glasses filter those channels so each eye receives a different view and the brain reads depth.

Reach for it when you need viewable stereoscopic depth with simple printed glasses, or borrow its red and cyan fringes as a retro 3D graphic style. Real depth needs a left-eye and right-eye view; shifting one flat image only imitates the surface look.

Gotcha: saturated source colors can disappear or compete with the filters, and too much horizontal separation is uncomfortable to fuse. Start from a neutral image, use modest disparity, and keep important detail aligned near the intended focal plane.

Build a red/cyan anaglyph from a stereo camera pair: place the two cameras on a short horizontal baseline, render synchronized left and right views, put the left view in the red channel and the right view in the green and blue channels, then align the subject at the focal plane.
