Smart defaults
Pre-fill the choice most people want so the common case takes zero clicks, while anyone can still change it.

What it is
A smart default pre-selects the answer most people want, so the common case costs zero decisions and everyone else just changes it. Defaults come in three grades: the population guess (today's date, the plan most accounts pick, the timezone the browser reports), the personal one (their last choice, their usual folder), and the contextual one (the project they were just looking at).
Reach for defaults wherever a field has a boring right answer. They are the highest-leverage form change you can make, and behavioral economics has the receipts: opt-out organ donation and auto-enrolled retirement plans move participation by tens of points on the strength of which box starts ticked.
Gotcha: that power cuts both ways. A pre-ticked marketing consent is a dark pattern and, under GDPR, not consent at all. And a plausible but wrong default is worse than a blank field, because nobody proofreads pre-filled values: the old shipping address gets shipped to. Guessing from thin evidence is how you get there. Browser language is a language preference, not a country, so deriving currency from it drops people into the wrong one. Rule of thumb, default the cheap and reversible from evidence you actually hold, and leave the irreversible empty.
Ask AI for it
Add smart defaults to this form, and default only from evidence the product actually has. Use values already saved on the account, the user's previous choice for the same field, the browser's language preferences, the timezone detected at runtime, and any option our own analytics show is the common one. Do not guess country or currency when the region is unknown, and do not invent a 'most popular' choice you cannot point at evidence for: leave that field empty and say so. Render every default as a normal editable value, never a locked one, and mark the inferred ones so they get proofread instead of waved through. Leave consent checkboxes, payment amounts, publishing switches, and destructive options unset.
