What it is

When a seller needs commitment before delivery, collect a deposit and leave the rest due later. That deposit is one partial payment against the same sale, with a clearly stated remaining balance and due date.

Use this for custom work, bookings, large orders, or milestones where the seller needs commitment before finishing delivery. Show the original total, every amount received, and the exact balance still owed on receipts and invoices.

Gotcha: collecting money is not the same as finishing the sale. Cancellation, refund, tax, and revenue treatment can depend on the contract and jurisdiction, so store the payment and its allocation separately from fulfillment and accounting status.

Ask AI for it

Build deposit and partial-payment support around Stripe Invoicing and PaymentIntents. Store the invoice total in minor units, accept a fixed or percentage deposit, create a payment schedule with explicit due dates, and allocate each successful PaymentIntent to the invoice without changing its original total. Display paid-to-date and balance-due amounts, reject over-allocation unless it becomes an explicit customer credit, and keep cancellation, refund, fulfillment, and accounting states separate.
