Credit note
A new document that reduces or cancels an invoice without editing the invoice that was already issued.

What it is
Once an invoice is final, fix an overcharge with a credit note instead of editing history. The new document points back to the original invoice and records the lines, tax, or amount being reduced or cancelled.
Use one for a returned item, a pricing correction, a cancelled service, or any approved reduction after an invoice is final. It gives the customer and both ledgers a matching paper trail.
Gotcha: a credit note changes what is owed, but it does not necessarily send money. If the invoice was already paid, separately decide whether to refund the payment or leave a customer credit, and link that action to the credit note.

Add immutable credit notes with the Stripe Credit Notes API. Let an operator select a finalized Stripe Invoice, choose full or line-level credit, enter a reason, and create a numbered credit note that reverses the matching subtotal and tax amounts. Recompute the amount due from issued documents, keep a complete audit trail, prevent credits above the remaining eligible amount, and make refunding an already paid balance a separate Stripe Refund linked to the credit note.
