What it is
A waveform monitor plots signal level vertically while preserving the image's left-to-right layout, so a bright window on the right appears as a high trace on the right. A vectorscope ignores position and luminance. It plots hue by angle and saturation by distance from the center. Together they tell you what a monitor can hide: clipped whites, crushed blacks, color casts, and chroma outside delivery limits.
Reach for scopes while correcting exposure, matching shots, checking skin, and preparing a Rec.709 master. Both instruments began as Tektronix hardware on a broadcast engineer's rack. Waveforms are commonly read in IRE, a scale named for the Institute of Radio Engineers, with nominal black near 0 and white near 100. The vectorscope's skin-tone indicator is a useful hue guide across many skin colors; distance from the center still depends on saturation and lighting.
Gotcha: scopes only describe the signal feeding them. Put the wrong color-space transform before the scopes and a healthy image can look illegal, or an incorrect one can look safe. Check the final output transform, and do not force every face onto the skin-tone line when colored light is meant to affect it.

Grade through a Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 output transform, keep intended blacks at or above 0 IRE and diffuse whites at or below 100 IRE, remove any neutral color cast, and place naturally lit skin near the vectorscope skin-tone indicator without increasing saturation just to reach it. Check every shot for clipped channels and out-of-range chroma before export.
