What it is
Spill is green or blue light reflected from a chroma screen onto the subject, especially along hair, shoulders, shiny fabric, and pale skin. After the screen is keyed away, spill suppression, usually shortened to despill, reduces that unwanted screen color and often replaces it with a neutral or opposing hue.
Despill after pulling a clean matte, then judge it against the actual replacement background. After Effects includes Advanced Spill Suppressor, while Premiere Pro's Ultra Key has dedicated Spill Suppression controls. Good suppression makes the subject belong in the new scene without changing colors that were genuinely present in clothing or props.
Gotcha: despill is not a second key. Pushing it too far turns skin gray, shifts blond hair magenta, or removes a green object that should remain green. Clean up the matte first, isolate difficult areas when possible, and neutralize only the contaminated pixels rather than globally desaturating the shot.
