A generator that emits and animates many small pieces at once, making effects such as sparks, dust, smoke, rain, or confetti.

What it is
A particle system makes a large crowd of small elements from one set of rules. An emitter decides where particles are born; birth rate, lifetime, velocity, gravity, drag, size, and color decide what happens next. The visible particle might be a dot, a textured sprite, or a small piece of geometry. William Reeves formalized the technique at Lucasfilm in 1982 to build the Genesis effect, the wall of fire that spreads across a planet in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Reach for it when animating every piece by hand would be absurd: sparks, dust, rain, snow, smoke, embers, bubbles, or confetti. After Effects ships with CC Particle World, while Trapcode Particular is the familiar production tool for deeper emitter and physics control.
Gotcha: more particles do not automatically make a better effect. Long lifetimes and high birth rates can fill the frame, slow previews, and turn crisp sparks into fog. Build the motion with a low count first, then raise density, enable motion blur, and lock the random seed before final review so every render tells the same story.

Build a short spark burst in Adobe After Effects with CC Particle World. Place the Producer at the impact point, animate Birth Rate from 0 to 3 and back to 0 over six frames, set Longevity near 1.2 seconds, choose a small faded particle, and use outward velocity with positive Gravity so the sparks arc down. Set Birth Size to 0.04 and Death Size to 0, shift color from pale yellow to orange-red over life, enable motion blur, and keep the random seed fixed for repeatable renders.
