Automatic reframing

Automatic reframing recrops a wide master into a vertical or square frame and then pans the crop window across the shot so the subject stays in it. Under the hood it is face and subject detection running per frame, smoothed into a keyframed position path so the crop glides instead of jittering. Premiere Pro calls it Auto Reframe, DaVinci Resolve calls it Smart Reframe, Final Cut calls it Smart Conform.

Reach for it when one 16:9 edit has to ship as 9:16 and 1:1 as well and re-editing three times is not happening. Most tools expose a motion speed setting: slow for locked-off interviews, fast for handheld or sports where the subject crosses frame. The honest alternative is letterboxing, which keeps the whole picture at the cost of a much smaller subject.

Gotcha: it picks a favorite. Some tools can detect and frame a group or hold two faces at once, but most select or prioritize a single primary subject, which is why two-shots make the crop ping-pong between faces. Any burned-in graphic, lower third, or logo that was composited before the reframe gets sliced in half or shoved off screen. Reframe first, add graphics and captions second. Also check every hard cut: the tracker often takes a few frames to find the new subject, which reads as a lurch right after the edit.
