What it is
Pre-order on Apple's App Store and pre-registration on Google Play put a real store listing in front of people before the app is released. A person reserves or registers interest, then the store handles the release-day notification. Automatic download can happen for eligible users and devices, but it is not a promise you should make to every registrant.
Use it when the listing, launch date, and acquisition campaign are ready before the production build is. It gives ads and press a store-owned destination instead of a dead link, and turns some launch interest into day-one installs. Google Play also supports a pre-registration reward, the in-game item that lands at release, which is why mobile game launches lean on this hardest. Treat the listing assets as final launch creative, because they are already public.
Gotcha: the store owns the relationship and gives you no portable list of email addresses. Registration can end with a notification instead of an install. The release still needs an approved, working build; moving a date or failing review can leave a polished coming-soon page pointing at nothing.

Prepare a pre-launch store package for this app: [paste description, countries, launch date, and assets]. Configure the plan around App Store Connect's Make Available for Pre-Order flow and Google Play Console Pre-registration. Return the opening and closing dates, country availability, final listing copy, asset checklist, release-day build deadline, and a day-by-day owner checklist. Write notification copy that says automatic installation depends on store and device eligibility, never guarantees it. Include a fallback launch email and deep link for people on our separate consented mailing list, plus a go/no-go check that blocks release if store review is incomplete.
