What it is

An age rating describes which content appears in an app. A kids category or child target goes further: it says children are part of the intended audience, which activates stricter store rules around data, ads, purchases, and links outside the app. Apple separates its age rating questionnaire from the Kids category. Google Play separates the IARC content rating from its Target audience and content declaration.

Use the category only when the whole product is built for its declared age group, not as a discovery tactic for a general app. On iOS, Kids category apps choose an age band and must place purchases and external links behind a parental gate. On Google Play, including children in the target audience brings the app under the Families policies.

Gotcha: the label follows the shipped app, including ad networks, analytics SDKs, web views, and user-generated content. A cartoon style does not decide the rating, and selecting a mature rating does not cancel child-directed privacy duties such as COPPA in the United States. Audit the complete data and content path before answering either store's questionnaire.

Ask AI for it

Audit this app for a child audience and prepare the store declarations. For Apple, complete the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire, select the correct Kids category age band from the actual content, and identify every purchase or external link that needs a parental gate under App Review Guideline 1.3. For Google Play, complete Target audience and content plus the IARC rating questionnaire, then test every SDK against the Google Play Families policies. Produce a table of content, ads, analytics, identifiers, location, user-generated content, purchases, and outbound links, with the exact code or screen supplying each answer. Flag contradictions with the privacy policy and remove or replace any SDK that cannot satisfy the declared child audience.
