What it is

Urgency is time pressure: a deadline that makes 'I'll think about it' expensive. Countdown timers, 'sale ends Friday', price going up on the 1st, a cohort that starts Monday, 'order in the next 2 hours for delivery tomorrow'. Its sibling is scarcity, which pressures on quantity instead of time; most good offers use one, not both at full volume.

It works because 'later' usually means never, not because people love clocks. So the strongest version is a deadline that already exists in your business: a launch window, an enrollment close, a shipping cutoff, a legacy price ending. Show it once near the CTA, state what changes when the clock hits zero, and make the change real.

Gotcha: evergreen timers that reset on refresh or on a new session. Anyone can reload the page, and the whole page loses credibility along with the timer. Fake countdowns and 'sale ends today' banners that never end are also actively enforced against as dark patterns by the FTC and under EU consumer rules. If the deadline is not real, do not build the clock.

Ask AI for it

Add an urgency block to this offer page using the real deadline [ISO timestamp and timezone] and the verified post-deadline change [change]. If either one is missing, do not build the block: say what is missing and stop, rather than manufacturing urgency. Build a countdown to that fixed timestamp (not a per-visitor timer that resets), place it directly above the primary CTA, and label exactly what changes when it hits zero, for example 'price goes to $79' or 'enrollment closes'. Keep it one line plus digits, restate the deadline date and timezone in plain text next to it, and hide the whole block once the deadline passes instead of restarting it.
