What it is

Seed list testing sends the same message to controlled accounts at Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and any mailbox providers important to your audience, then records whether it reached the inbox, a category tab, spam, or nowhere. It is a preflight check for authentication mistakes, broken rendering, blocked links, and provider-specific placement before a campaign reaches the real list.

Use a stable panel of accounts, your own or a rented one from a service like GlockApps or Litmus Spam Testing, and give every test a unique campaign marker and Message-ID so results cannot be confused with yesterday's copy. Check raw headers as well as the folder: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC can pass while the message still lands in spam, and delivery to one Gmail seed says nothing about Outlook.

Sample bias is the limit. Seed accounts are few, artificial, and usually have no real history with your sender, while placement for a subscriber can depend on that person's behavior. A clean seed test is not proof that the campaign will inbox, and clicking every tracked link from test accounts pollutes campaign analytics. Treat it as a smoke test beside production placement and complaint data, not a score to optimize in isolation.

Build a seed-list placement test for controlled Gmail and Microsoft 365 accounts. Add a unique test ID to a custom header and preserve the RFC 5322 Message-ID header of the sent message, which is not always the provider's own message ID. Poll the Gmail API with a 'rfc822msgid:<message-id>' query and Microsoft Graph with an internetMessageId filter for that exact message, then record inbox, spam, missing, and Gmail category labels without opening or clicking the message. Fetch the raw headers and store SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results from Authentication-Results beside placement. Set a fixed timeout and report late arrival separately from missing mail. Keep seed events out of campaign open and click analytics, show results per provider rather than one blended score, and label the report as a smoke test rather than a prediction for every subscriber.
