What it is
IP warming is the controlled ramp from a small number of messages to the normal volume on a new dedicated sending IP. A sudden blast from an address with no history looks risky to Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo; steady mail to recipients who want it gives each receiver evidence about complaints, bounces, and engagement before the next increase.
Reach for it when moving meaningful volume onto a dedicated IP, including an IP that has sat idle long enough to lose its recent pattern. Start with the most engaged recipients, pace mail throughout the day, and judge the ramp separately by mailbox provider. Hold or reduce volume when deferrals, complaints, or hard bounces worsen instead of treating a calendar as permission to keep doubling.
Warming cannot make the IP carry bad mail. Warming does not fix a stale list, weak consent, broken authentication, or a cold sending domain; domain reputation keeps its own history. Low or erratic volume often does better on a reputable shared pool, and Amazon SES Dedicated IP addresses in managed mode automate the ramp rather than asking you to run a manual schedule.
