What it is
Solarpunk imagines a future where climate repair, renewable energy, and strong communities have become ordinary life. Visually, solar panels, wind turbines, gardens, canals, and repaired buildings sit inside warm sunlight and the curling plant forms of Art Nouveau. The machinery is visible because the system is part of the story. Chobani's 2021 animated short 'Dear Alice', made by The Line, is the piece most people have actually seen: farm robots doing chores across terraced gardens on a Ghibli-style hillside.
Reach for it when a project needs environmental optimism with practical texture: climate fiction, civic campaigns, clean-energy products, community tools, or education. Show people maintaining shared systems, not just towers buried under decorative vines.
Gotcha: a glass skyscraper with leaves on it is still generic eco-tech. Solarpunk needs evidence of how the place works, such as shade, water capture, food growing, public transit, repair, and shared space. Keep the future lived-in and achievable, not spotless luxury real estate.
