What it is
Naive art uses direct, unschooled-looking marks instead of academic realism. Perspective may flatten, scale can follow importance rather than distance, outlines stay visible, and color arrives in broad unmixed areas. Henri Rousseau, a customs officer who painted jungles he had never seen, is its best-known anchor; The Sleeping Gypsy and The Dream are the usual reference images. Grandma Moses did the same for American rural scenes.
Reach for it when an illustration should feel personal, candid, or storybook-like: editorial work, packaging, posters, cultural events, and small product moments. Let the drawing keep its uneven rhythm, but repeat a limited palette and a few recognizable shapes so the system still holds together.
Gotcha: deliberate simplicity is not permission to caricature a community or borrow folk motifs without context. It can also turn into generic childishness when every line is merely wobbled. Make intentional choices about viewpoint, proportion, and color, and keep essential UI labels outside the art.
