What it is
Memphis is a specific thing, not a mood: the Memphis Group, founded by Ettore Sottsass in Milan in 1981, made furniture and objects that broke every modernist rule on purpose. Plastic laminate instead of walnut, clashing pattern on pattern, colors that fight, forms that look structurally wrong. The Carlton bookcase and the Bacterio laminate are the canonical objects. The graphic vocabulary everyone copies (squiggle, confetti dot, zigzag, half-circle, black-and-white grid, terrazzo speckle) comes out of those surfaces.
Use it when you want loud, funny, and unserious: a kids product, a party page, a 404, a startup that refuses to look like a bank. Memphis loves flat solid color, thick black keylines, and shapes floating with no shared alignment.
Gotcha: sprinkling five squiggles on white space is not Memphis, it is a 2016 stock illustration. The real move is pattern against pattern and color against color, with at least one combination that feels slightly wrong. Also, it is Italian postmodernism, not Miami: keep it pastel and primary, not neon, or you will land in vaporwave.
