What it is

Maximalism fills the frame on purpose. Patterns clash, type sizes jump, ornament sits on top of ornament, and three ideas share a space that minimalism would give to one. The discipline is not restraint, it's control: everything is loud, so hierarchy has to come from contrast in scale, weight, and density rather than from empty room.

Reach for it when the brand is personality-first and blending in is the real risk: music, fashion, food, festivals, zines, portfolio sites. Anchors worth naming in a brief are the 1980s Memphis Group, David Carson's Ray Gun spreads, Victorian and Baroque ornament, and the layered-sticker energy of Gucci under Alessandro Michele.

Gotcha: maximalism is not the absence of a system. Pick one anchor the eye can rest on (usually a single dominant headline or image), keep the palette to a fixed set of five or six clashing colors rather than infinite ones, and let everything else fight around it. Skip that and you get a page nobody can read, which is just mess.

Ask AI for it

Design this as a dense maximalist composition. Layer at least three clashing patterns (stripes, florals, checkerboard) behind the content, use a fixed palette of six high-saturation colors that argue with each other, and mix a heavy display serif for headlines with a condensed sans for everything else. Overlap elements, rotate a few of them off-axis, and pile decorative borders, ornament, and stickers into the margins. Two rules hold it together: one dominant headline that stays the biggest thing on the page, and two or three deliberately quiet areas, flat color behind the body copy and around the main action, so the density has somewhere to break.
