What it is
Art Nouveau ran roughly from 1890 to 1910 and answered industrial mass production with nature. Everything curves: the signature 'whiplash' line swells and tapers like a plant stem, ornament is botanical (irises, lilies, vines, peacock feathers, insect wings), compositions are asymmetric, and the lettering is custom-drawn to flow with the artwork rather than sit on top of it. Palette is muted and slightly dusty: olive, mustard, sage, rose, cream. It went by other names locally: Jugendstil in the German-speaking countries, Modernisme in Catalonia, Stile Liberty in Italy. Austria's Vienna Secession is often folded in with it, but it was its own movement, overlapping in time and people while pulling toward flatter, more geometric work than the whiplash curve.
