What it is
Jewel tones are the rare combination of high chroma and low lightness: colors that stay intensely colorful while sitting dark. The names come straight from gemstones, because gemstones are one of the few real-world materials that pull it off: emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, amethyst purple, topaz gold, garnet.
Use them when you want richness rather than brightness: spirits and wine, hotels and restaurants, theatre and awards, fashion, premium dark-mode products. They pair beautifully with metallics (brass, gold, copper) and with deep near-black grounds, which is the whole Art Deco and Victorian-parlor formula. Because each jewel tone already carries a lot of visual weight, two or three plus a metal is usually the entire palette.
Gotcha: they are hard to actually produce. High chroma at low lightness sits near the edge of sRGB, so a jewel tone you mixed in a wide-gamut tool will clip and go flat or muddy on a standard display, and worse in CMYK print. Check them in sRGB before committing. The other trap is text: jewel tones look dark but their contrast against black is weak, so a sapphire heading on a charcoal background is nearly unreadable. Let a light neutral or a metallic carry the type.

Use a jewel-tone palette: pick two or three deep, highly saturated gemstone colors (emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, amethyst purple) at low lightness (25 to 40 percent) with chroma pushed as high as sRGB allows without clipping. Ground them on a near-black charcoal or ink background and add one metallic accent (flat brass or gold, not a shiny gradient). Set all body text in a light warm neutral or cream so it clears contrast against the deep fields. Verify every color renders inside sRGB.
