HDR color
Color that uses an HDR display's brightness above ordinary white, so sunlight, fire, and reflections can look genuinely brighter.

What it is
HDR color uses luminance above the display's ordinary reference white instead of squeezing every highlight into the same ceiling as an SDR image. On a capable display, a sun glint, flame, or neon tube can therefore emit more light than a white page in the same scene. That extra range is display headroom, measured in nits; Rec. 2100 defines the PQ and HLG systems used to carry HDR video.
Reach for HDR when brightness itself carries the effect: specular reflections, lamps, fireworks, sunlight, or chrome. Apple calls its extended range EDR, and grading tools such as DaVinci Resolve let you place those highlights above paper white while keeping ordinary surfaces comfortable. Wide gamut and HDR often travel together, but they solve different problems: gamut expands which colors fit, while HDR expands how bright they can appear.
Gotcha: the whole path must preserve HDR, from the source and color space through the operating system to the display. Otherwise the result is clipped or tone-mapped back to SDR. Do not push the whole interface into the headroom; reserve it for highlights, provide a deliberate SDR version, and check both on real displays because a screenshot cannot prove the HDR effect.

Grade this footage in DaVinci Resolve as a Rec. 2100 PQ HDR master. Keep diffuse white near 203 nits, reserve higher luminance for light sources and specular highlights, and prevent broad surfaces or UI text from using the display headroom. Produce a separately tone-mapped Rec. 709 SDR version, then implement web delivery with the CSS @media (dynamic-range: high) query selecting the HDR asset and the SDR asset as the default. Verify highlight detail, skin tones, and subtitle readability on both outputs.
