What it is

Primary logo is a job title, not a shape. It names the one variant you use whenever there is enough room and no reason to use something else, and in most identities that is the horizontal combination mark. Everything else you own (stacked version, icon only, one color, reversed) is then defined as a deviation from it, with a written reason to reach for each.

Pick it early, because the rest of the system hangs off it. Clear space, minimum size, colorways, and the misuse page all get measured against the primary. If your guidelines never say which one is primary, everyone picks their favorite and the brand quietly fragments across decks, invoices, and the careers page.

Gotcha: teams choose the version that looks best on a full-bleed title slide, then discover it is unreadable on a favicon, a pen, and an embroidered cap. Choose the one that appears most often in the wild, not the most beautiful one. Test at 24px tall and in single-ink black before you lock it. Falling apart down there does not demote the variant: the primary stays primary wherever it fits, and you write down a minimum size plus the named icon-only, responsive, or one-color version that takes over below the threshold.

Ask AI for it

Using the attached approved logo variants and this application inventory [USES AND FREQUENCIES], select the variant that works in the greatest number of normal contexts as the primary. State the selection criteria you used, show the chosen variant large on white, and document its clear space and minimum size with dimension lines. Then name the approved replacement for narrow, small, dark, and single-ink contexts, one named variant per case, drawn only from the supplied set. Flat vector, no mockups, no shadows, and do not invent variants that were not attached.
