The audio shape on a timeline: time runs left to right, and taller peaks show larger signal amplitude.

What it is
A waveform is the familiar audio shape drawn across a timeline. Left to right is time; height above and below the center line is the signal's instantaneous amplitude and polarity. Sharp spikes are transients, flat areas are quiet, and squared-off tops can reveal clipping. Those flat tops are the visual signature of the loudness war: the 2008 CD master of Metallica's Death Magnetic is the sausage-shaped example people still pass around.
Use it to find edits, breaths, beats, silence, sudden level changes, and the exact start of a sound. Zoom in far enough and the smooth-looking blob becomes individual samples. Stereo files show two waveforms, one for the left channel and one for the right.
Gotcha: a waveform does not show pitch or frequency content, and its height is not perceived loudness. A bass note and a harsh click can reach the same peak while sounding completely different. The display also rescales when you zoom, so use meters and a spectral view before diagnosing a sound from its silhouette alone.
