What it is

Headroom is the unused level between the signal's highest peak and the point where the system clips. In digital audio, a peak at -8 dBFS has 8 dB of headroom before the hard ceiling at 0 dBFS. It is breathing room for the laugh, drum hit, or plugin boost you did not predict.

Leave it at every stage, especially while recording and mixing. Spoken word commonly records with peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS, then the mix bus stays below the ceiling until the final limiter sets the delivery level. Broadcast and post write the reserve down: EBU R 68 puts alignment level at -18 dBFS and SMPTE RP 155 puts it at -20 dBFS, leaving that much room above normal program level by design. Modern 24-bit recording has enough usable range that chasing the top of the meter buys nothing.

Gotcha: headroom must exist where the overload happens. Turning down a DAW fader cannot repair a mic preamp that already clipped, and lowering the master does not protect an earlier plugin that is overloading. Headroom is also not wasted loudness: the finished file can be raised or limited later, after the mix is under control.
