What it is

A funnel is an ordered list of events plus a time window. The tool counts people who did step one, then how many of those went on to do step two, and so on, which draws the familiar shrinking staircase. The useful number is never the top line, it is the step-to-step percentage: one stage usually leaks far worse than the others (funnel leakage), and that stage is your whole to-do list.

Reach for a funnel when a metric is bad and you cannot tell which part is bad. Keep it to three to five steps that sit close together in time. Steps spread over weeks turn into a chart of how long people took, not of where they got stuck.

Gotcha: the settings decide the answer. A 1-hour window and a 30-day window on the same flow produce wildly different rates, and 'strict order' mode invents fake drop-off when people legitimately skip a step (the visitor who goes straight to checkout without seeing pricing). Also remember the funnel only sees people who reached step one; it says nothing about everyone who never showed up.

Ask AI for it

Build a conversion funnel view for this flow with steps: [step 1, step 2, step 3, step 4]. Count unique users, first occurrence per user, any-order off, 7-day completion window. Render it as stacked horizontal bars whose widths are proportional to the surviving count, with the step-to-step conversion percentage between each pair of bars and the absolute lost count in muted red underneath. Show overall top-to-bottom conversion once at the top, and highlight the single worst step so the biggest leak is obvious at a glance.
